Are the Matrix Pads mandatory or necessary?

Though many love them, they are not. The Matrix Pad is a capillary mat that serves as a wicking pad which helps to disperse water and nutrients throughout the top of the pot's medium and gives a more even feed. It also serves as another barrier against bugs or pests coming in and out of the top of your medium or pot.
